D. Hayes Agnew surgery society
D. Hayes Agnew (1818 -1892) was the first John Rhea Barton Professor of Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania from 1878 to 1889.
The Agnew Society is the oldest student run medical student society in the country, founded in 1888 as a surgical interest group.
Today, the goal of the Agnew Surgery Society is to serve as a link between Surgical Faculty and medical students, and to promote medical student interest in surgical careers. Throughout the year, the society sponsors a shadowing program for preclinical students, lectures by Penn Faculty, as well as a research fellowship program for MS1 students during the summer following the first year. In the spring, the Agnew Lecture is given at Surgical Grand Rounds. The Agnew speaker is chosen from a short list of surgical icons who are felt to represent the past, present and future of surgery in America. The society also sponsors a dinner preceding the lecture, at which students have the opportunity to interact with Surgical Faculty in a social setting.
Though the focus of the group has traditionally been on General Surgery and its subspecialties, students interested in all surgical fields are encouraged to participate.
Agnew surgery society membership
Membership in the Agnew Society is open to all Penn Medical Students, and all classes will have the opportunity to join our email lists at the beginning of the school year. Sign-up sheets will be available at the Student Activities Fair, in MS1 and MS2 lecture halls, and by email. A membership survey will be sent in early September, and students will be asked to commit to attending at least 4 of 5 Agnew meetings to be considered Agnew members. Individuals wishing to attend less frequently are welcome and announcements about upcoming programs will be sent to the entire student body. Students are kindly asked to indicate their interest in attending skills workshops in advance, in order to ensure a sufficient supply of materials and instructors. Due to space limitations, invitations to the Agnew dinner will be extended only to members who fulfill the above requirement.
If you wish to join the Society at any point during the year, email Prateek Sharma at Prateek.Sharma@pennmedicine.upenn.edu with your name and contact information.

William A. Altemeier, MDThe Department of Surgery has established a six-week fellowship for MS1 students currently enrolled at the Perelman School of Medicine during the summer following their first year. This unique program affords pre-clinical students the opportunity to interact one-on-one with a Penn surgeon, learning about his or her day-to-day activities and helping out in the operating room, office, and laboratory. Project specifics are left to the discretion of the surgeon and student, although a summary of all projects and student experiences must be presented at the Agnew Fall Research Symposium the following school year. Below is a list of current and previous Agnew Summer Fellows:
The department provides a stipend for the six-week period, and applications are judged on the strength of the proposed projects as well as the students’ expressed interest in surgery. Applications are considered during the spring of the first year. Please forward your application and supporting materials, including your CV, to Ari.Brooks@pennmedicine.upenn.edu and the current Agnew Surgery Society Research Committee Co-Chairs.
This year, there will be up to ten sponsored positions, with a stipend of $1,000 for the six-week fellowship term. A $500 travel expense will be covered if the project leads to a national presentation. One position is reserved for a project in global surgery, described below.
Agnew Summer Global Surgery Fellowship Program
According to the Lancet Commission on Global Surgery, five billion people lack access to safe and affordable surgical care. Accordingly, the Agnew Surgery Society has teamed up with the Center for Global Health and Penn Global Surgery Group to establish a position for students interested in summer research in global surgery. The student selected as the Summer Global Surgery Fellow will have access to additional funding through the Penn Center for Global Health to cover travel expenses in addition to the Agnew Summer Fellowship funding for work performed before and after travel. The application is identical to that for the Agnew Summer Fellowship, but additional paperwork may be required once accepted.
To Apply:
- Applicants must be first-year medical students currently enrolled at the Perelman School of Medicine and in good academic standing at the time of application submission and award distribution.
- Use the shadowing program to explore various areas of surgical practice and connect with potential mentors. Research must be performed with an investigator in one of the divisions of the Department of Surgery.
- Finalize your faculty mentor and contact Ari.Brooks@pennmedicine.upenn.edu for pre-approval of your mentor by February 1.
- Submit your application by March 1.

One of the core tenets of the Agnew Surgery Society is mentorship in the field of academic surgery. A major part of this mentorship is the fostering of research interests and teaching of sound scientific ideology. Agnew Surgery Society members frequently work with mentors in the Surgery Department to design and run investigative research projects during their time in medical school. These projects range from basic science bench research to projects in global surgery. Many of these students go on to present at national conferences and have their work published in peer-reviewed journals. Below you will find databases of past surgical research projects by former Agnew Summer Fellows and other Perelman School of Medicine students.

The Cardiothoracic Surgery Interest Group (CSIG) at the Perelman School of Medicine aims to increase medical student exposure and access to the field of cardiothoracic surgery. CSIG connects medical students to CT surgery faculty and residents, facilitating mentorship, shadowing, and research engagement. CSIG also organizes educational talks and surgical simulation events throughout the year.

The Clyde F. Barker Vascular Surgery Interest Group (VSIG) at the Perelman School of Medicine strives to provide exposure and opportunities for engagement for medical students within the Division of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy at the University of Pennsylvania. Medical students can learn more about the specialty through clinical opportunities, research projects, and educational / simulation sessions. Clinical opportunities include attending / scrubbing vascular surgery cases and participating in clinic. Educational opportunities include lectures and open / endovascular simulation sessions facilitated by trainees and faculty. There are a number of research projects also available to those interested on an individual basis. The VSIG also affords those students interested in pursuing residency training in vascular surgery the opportunity for longitudinal mentorship relationships with current trainees and faculty.
Events (Final Schedule TBD)
