Cardiovascular Imaging Fellowship

The Cardiovascular Imaging (CVI) fellowship trains radiologists in advanced CT and MRI to apply these cutting-edge techniques to elucidate cardiac and vascular pathologies. On completing the fellowship, radiologists will meet the requirements for Level 3 certification in Cardiac CT and Level 3 certification in Cardiac MRI, as set forth by the Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography (SCCT) and Society of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (SCMR), respectively.
Career preparation & curriculum scope
The fellowship prepares radiologists for careers in both academics and private practice. Radiologists will be able to run cardiac MRI and cardiac CT programs at the institutions. Thus, the pedagogy is heterogeneous but comprehensive, focusing on all areas of CVI, including physics of CT and MRI, and an understanding of “how the scanner actually works”, imaging and operational protocols, economics and billing, research design and execution, along with a thorough understanding of cardiovascular physiology and pathology.
Resources & collaborations
Penn Radiology has the latest equipment from across the vendors, including the photon-counting CT. CVI is held by strong clinical, educational, and research collaborations with cardiologists. CVI provides imaging support to the world-renowned Penn Aorta Program. The division collaborates with a range of basic scientists, including computational biologists and scientists at the intersection of AI and medicine. Faculty in the division also lead outreach efforts in low- and middle-income countries.
Fellowship structure & responsibilities
The fellowship comprises 13 four-week blocks: 9 are core requirements for cardiovascular CT and MRI, and 3 are electives that can be spent on a variety of areas, including, but not limited to, pediatric cardiac imaging at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, cardiac nuclear medicine, and the echo laboratory. Fellows will be involved in teaching of radiology residents, medical students, and visiting faculty. They will participate in teaching activities at CME conferences, lead quality initiatives, and present interesting cases at b-weekly meetings.
Interdisciplinary reach & scholarly growth
Expertise in CVI can be grafted onto other specialties in radiology, such as thoracic imaging, neuroradiology, abdominal imaging, and nuclear medicine. The fellowship dovetails with a wide range of scholarly and extramural interests such as informatics, AI, basic science and clinical research, economics and health policy, medical humanities, and global health. We seek not just to imbibe leadership and create leaders, but also to augment existing scholarly passions.
Accreditation & eligibility
This training program is associated with the ACGME-accredited University of Pennsylvania Diagnostic Radiology Residency programs. We welcome applications from across the US. We are also part of the alternative pathway for qualified international medical graduates.
