Neurocritical Care Fellowship Program

The Penn Neurocritical Care Fellowship Program was established in 2006 and offers a 1–3-year fellowship depending on individual career interests. Our program is based on the curriculum defined by the United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties (link to UCNS content outline). Training occurs at the 24 bed Neuro-ICU in the Pavilion of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and the 12 bed Neuro-ICU at the Penn Presbyterian Medical Center. Both Neuro-ICU’s are staffed by our distinguished faculty and supported by outstanding nurses and advanced practice providers. Our program offers exposure to state of the art neuromonitoring techniques which provides our fellows a truly world-class training experience. Upon completion of their training, fellows will be board eligible in Neurocritical Care.

Fellows rotate through the Surgical, Trauma, and Medical ICUs, gaining broad critical care exposure across diverse patient populations. A rich array of electives is available spanning neurological subspecialties, cardiac critical care, neurosurgery, anesthesiology and airway management, intraoperative monitoring, global health, palliative care, rehabilitation medicine, neuroprognostication, and post-ICU recovery clinics, among others. Fellows with unique or specialized interests are strongly encouraged to connect with program leadership, who are committed to crafting individualized elective experiences that align with their professional goals.

Fellowship curriculum

Fellows receive comprehensive training in the diagnosis and management of severe brain and spine trauma, subarachnoid hemorrhage, ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke, neuromuscular and epilepsy emergencies, brain tumors, and central nervous system autoimmune and infectious diseases. The program builds core critical care competencies in airway and ventilator management, bedside ultrasound, cardiopulmonary support, and invasive bedside procedures. A robust didactic curriculum includes weekly conferences covering key topics in neurocritical care, general critical care, and stroke, complemented by multidisciplinary training alongside medical and surgical critical care fellows through joint lecture series and simulation exercises. Fellows are actively encouraged to engage in ongoing clinical trials and are expected to develop and present an independent project - in quality improvement, education, or clinical or basic science research - under the guidance of a faculty mentor aligned with their career interests.

Requirement for Applicants

• Successful completion of an ACGME-accredited Neurology residency (or Canadian equivalent) prior to start of fellowship
• Eligible for medical licensure in the state of Pennsylvania, including successful completion of USMLE Step 3 (or COMLEX Level 3)
