Overview of the fellowship programs 

The Neurology Department of the University of Pennsylvania creates clinical and academic leaders in the Neurology subspecialties. We offer in-depth clinical training and personalized mentorship focused on career development.

The Department of Neurology at the University of Pennsylvania develops the next generation of clinical and academic leaders across the neurology subspecialties. Our fellowship programs provide comprehensive clinical training, individualized mentorship, and a strong commitment to career development. We seek fellows who are driven to advance the field of neurology through excellence in patient care, education, and research.

We seek fellows who are driven to advance the field of Neurology. Our programs balance breadth and depth in clinical training under world-recognized clinicians and educators. Our fellows frequently pursue additional, formal training in research, education or healthcare administration. Opportunities include a Masters of Science in Clinical Epidemiology, Translational Research, Health Policy Research or a Masters in Education. The Department holds an NINDS R25 grant, which allows research-oriented fellows who participated in the R25 program as residents to apply for additional funded laboratory time during fellowship.

We are located on the historic campus of the University of Pennsylvania, home of the Nation’s first medical school. The geographic integration of the University of Pennsylvania allows our trainees to access the extraordinary academic resources of the larger University as part of their scholarly and career development.

Living in Philadelphia

Most of our fellows live in downtown Philadelphia, within walking and biking distance of campus. The vibrant cultural, athletic, dining, and social scene of Philadelphia provides the backdrop for friendships that extend well beyond the halls of the hospital. Our department is one of the largest of its kind, with over 100 full-time faculty distributed over 12 clinical divisions and 20 sub-specialty programs. Most of our faculty are engaged in academic pursuits, in addition to their clinical work. Clinical training for the majority of our fellows primarily occurs at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, the flagship hospital of the Penn Health System, and one of the Nation’s top hospitals.

The four other sites of training are located in downtown Philadelphia within walking or biking distance. The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP)—consistently ranked as the top hospital of its kind—is the site of training in Pediatric Neurology. The Penn Presbyterian Medical Center is the integrated site of trauma care for the health system and provides additional training in neuro-critical care. Pennsylvania Hospital (founded 1751) is the Nation’s first hospital and is the home of the Parkinson Disease and Movement Disorders Center and our ALS Center. The Veterans Hospital is a regional referral center for veterans with ALS and Movement Disorders, as well as providing care in general neurology and epilepsy.

Exceptional clinical training

Our department is one of the largest in the nation, with nearly 200 full-time faculty across 15 clinical divisions and 20 sub-specialty programs. Most faculty are engaged in academic pursuits, in addition to their clinical work.

Clinical training is principally at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania the flagship hospital of the Penn Health System and one of the nation's top hospitals. Fellows also train at four additional sites; all located within walking or biking distance in downtown Philadelphia.

  • Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP): Nationally recognized leader in pediatric care and the primary training site for Pediatric Neurology Children's Hospital of Philadelphia
  • Penn Presbyterian Medical Center: Penn Medicine's regional trauma center, providing advanced experience in neurocritical care. There should be a link to PPMC
  • Pennsylvania Hospital: The nation's first hospital and home to the Parkinson Disease and Movement Disorders Center and the ALS Center. There should be a link to PAH
  • Corporal Michael J. Crescenz VA Medical Center: A regional referral center for veterans with ALS and movement disorders, while also offering extensive experience in general neurology and epilepsy. There should be a link to VAMC
