The Department of Medicine at Penn is committed to medical student education. Our goal is to provide all medical students with a strong foundation in the specialty of Internal Medicine starting from the pre-clinical curriculum through the clerkship, sub-internship, and electives. Our medical student leadership team is committed to providing high quality small group and clinical learning experiences for students so that they are prepared for residency, regardless of specialty. We have clinical training experiences on general internalmedicine and specialty inpatient rotations, inpatient and outpatient specialty electives, and intensive care unit rotations. Our faculty, fellows, and residents pride themselves on a tradition of teaching excellence. For those students interested in Internal Medicine as a career, we provide longitudinal career counseling, mentoring and research opportunities. Our doors are always open, so please feel free to contact any of us as needed!
Career mentoring
All medical students interested in Internal Medicine can request a faculty career mentor in the Department of Medicine. Students are matched to a faculty member who has clinical, research, educational or administrative roles of interest to the student.
William Pepper Medical Society
This medical student internal medicine interest group is named after William Pepper, Jr., MD who founded our nation’s first teaching hospital, the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, in 1874. The society seeks to attract medical students to the exciting field of internal medicine through formal mentoring initiatives and monthly events. Membership in the William Pepper Medical Society is open to all Penn medical students, and all classes have the opportunity to join our email lists at the beginning of the school year at the Student Activities Fair. Advertisements for events will go out periodically during the year.
