Education and training

The Penn Center for Anesthesia Research emphasizes translational and interdisciplinary science, both within the department, other departments and institutes in the schools of medicine, nursing, arts and sciences, engineering and veterinary medicine.

Faculty members of the Division of Translational Medicine and Human Genetics teach at virtually all levels of education throughout the School of Medicine.

In conjunction with the Department of Medicine, the Division offers a 5-year combined residency in internal medicine and clinical genetics. The division also has a major role in the Medical Genetics Residency, sponsored by The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

The Division now offers a Pharmacogenetics Fellowship which aims to prepare the trainee for an independent research career in the area of pharmacogenomics and precision medicine. The fellow will obtain a Certificate in Precision Medicine with an opportunity to obtain a master’s degree.

Faculty members are also involved in the education of Penn graduate students in the Biomedical Graduate Studies Program and students in the Schools of Dental Medicine and Nursing. They also participate in both the didactic and clinical teaching, and research mentoring of students in the genetic counseling master's program at Arcadia University.

In addition to the clinical preceptorship available to Penn medical students, students from other medical schools may arrange for rotations of one month. Learn more about the visiting student clerkship program

Pharmacogenomics fellowship

Penn Medicine now offers a Pharmacogenomics Fellowship.

Pharmacogenomics Fellowship at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA

  • PharmD
  • PGY1 residency (or equivalent experience)
  • US Citizen or permanent resident
  • Eligible for pharmacist licensure in the state of Pennsylvania

Fellowship description

This two year fellowship aims to prepare the trainee for an independent research career in the area of pharmacogenomics and precision medicine. The fellow will primarily be involved with pharmacogenomics implementation research with areas of focus in oncology, cardiology or psychiatry. Additional fellowship experiences include participation in a pharmacist-run pharmacogenomics clinic, development of grant-writing skills, laboratory-based skills, electronic health records research linked to an ethnically-diverse biobank, genomic and other -omic data analysis, preparation of abstracts and manuscripts, and presentation of research at national meetings. The fellow will have the opportunity to obtain a master’s degree.

University of Pennsylvania has a rich infrastructure for clinical, translational and genetic research under the newly formed Penn Center for Precision Medicine.

Internal medicine and medical genetics residency

The Division of Medical Genetics and the Department of Medicine now offer a 4-year combined residency in internal medicine and clinical genetics. The combined program saves one year in achieving board eligibility in both primary specialties. This residency is accredited by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Medical Genetics. The program director is Katherine L. Nathanson, MD.

The curriculum for the medical genetics residency involves training primarily in disorders that affect adults – cancer genetics, neurogenetics, adult connective tissue disorders and adult dysmorphology are emphasized. Additionally, residents have required rotations in:

  • Pediatric clinical genetics
  • Metabolic genetics
  • Reproductive/prenatal genetics
  • Clinical laboratory genetics (cytogenetics, biochemical genetics and molecular diagnostics).
  • Over 30 medical genetics faculty are available to mentor the required research experience.

Interested senior medical students must apply to both the internal medicine residency program of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and the medical genetics residency program of the University of Pennsylvania. An interview for both programs can be scheduled on sequential days.
