We seek to train experts in the diagnosis and management of complex hypertension, and our graduates will be eligible for certification as Hypertension Specialists by the American Hypertension Specialist Certification Program.
Fellows will be trained to diagnose and treat resistant hypertension, labile hypertension, primary aldosteronism, renal artery stenosis, fibromuscular dysplasia, pheochromocytoma, paraganglioma, and genetic causes of hypertension. Fellows will also learn appropriate co-management of these patients with cardiology, endocrinology, neurology, sleep medicine, vascular surgery, and interventional radiology. They will become competent interpreting 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure reports, and they will learn to utilize emerging therapeutics for hypertension such as renal denervation and novel antihypertensive agents as they become available.
Scholarly project
Fellows will also complete a scholarly project by joining an ongoing clinical trial, piloting a small clinical study, collaborating with industry on novel therapeutics for hypertension, or a quality improvement project for the hypertension clinic. They will be encouraged to submit their work to the AHA Hypertension Conference, and they will have the opportunity to submit 1-2 review papers on hypertension topics with an attending.
Eligibility
Candidates must have completed a standard ACGME nephrology fellowship and internal medicine residency by the start of the fellowship. They must submit a letter of interest describing their motivation for subspecialty training, career goals, and research interest. Candidates will be interviewed by the program director and a selection committee.
