The hematology/oncology fellowship program at Penn is designed to provide our trainees with the tools they need to pursue lifelong careers characterized by clinical and research excellence, innovation and commitment to an academic career. The Division aims to ensure that trainees completing our program become leaders in hematology/oncology, whether they pursue careers in clinical, health services, translational, population science or bench research.
Penn fellows can train in their 2nd and 3rd years in a broad array of basic science laboratories or Master's degree programs across our large and diverse campus. Our fellows work in Departments and Schools throughout the University of Pennsylvania, as well as the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, the Abramson Cancer Center, the Abramson Family Cancer Research Institute and the Wistar Institute.
Research programs in classical hematology include the Penn-CHOP Blood Disorders Center for Patient Care and Discovery, the Comprehensive Sickle Cell Disease Program, the Comprehensive Hemophilia and Thrombosis Research Program.
Our fellowship offers two tracks:
- Combined hematology/oncology fellowship: Training in solid and malignant hematology as well as classical hematology
- Hematology-focused fellowship: Training in malignant and classical hematology. This track is intended for fellows who envision a career focused on classical hematology.

Master's Degree Programs
Penn offers several highly regarded Master's degree programs in which fellows may participate. The most popular in recent years have been:
- Master of Science in Clinical Epidemiology (MSCE). Offered through the Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics (CCEB), this program provides training in epidemiology, clinical trials, genetics or bioethics.
- Master of Science in Translational Research (MTR). Offered through the Institute for Translational Medicine and Therapeutics (ITMAT), this program trains fellows in developmental therapeutics.
- Master of Science in Health Policy Research (MSHP). In collaboration with the Leonard Davis Institute for Health Economics and the Department of Health Care Management at the Wharton School, this program trains fellows in health services and policy research and prepares our trainees for careers in academia, government, the non-profit sector, or industry.
Research Training
The Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania benefits from more than 70 NIH T32 awards that support post-doctoral trainees at Penn, the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and the Wistar Institute. The majority of our fellows receive support for their research training (in years two and three) through these grants.
