Message from the chief of endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism

Headshot of Susan Mandel, MD MPH
Susan J. Mandel, MD, MPH

Welcome to the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at the University of Pennsylvania. Endocrine diseases including diabetes, obesity, osteoporosis, and thyroid disease are becoming increasingly prevalent in our population. Treatments for these and other conditions are changing rapidly, and exciting advances in basic research offer a promise of even more effective therapies to come.

As a research-intensive division in the Department of Medicine, our faculty and staff provide state-of-the-art clinical care for patients with diabetes and endocrine disorders, and generate new knowledge with the ultimate goal of improving our understanding and treatment of these diseases. The research is fostered by Penn's NIH-funded Diabetes Research Center, one of 17 such centers in the United States. We also teach endocrinology to medical students and residents, while training the next generation of endocrinologists and diabetes specialists through our outstanding fellowship program, funded in part by a training grant from the NIH.

I encourage you to explore our website to learn more about us.

Sincerely,
Susan J. Mandel, MD, MPH
Division Chief
Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism Division

Dr. Mandel earned her A.B. in History and Science from Harvard University and her M.D. from Columbia University. She completed her internship and residency at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, before returning to Harvard for fellowship training in endocrinology.  She served as Instructor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School, and, while there, earned her M.P.H. from the School of Public Health.  She was appointed Assistant Professor of Medicine at Penn in 1997, promoted to Associate Professor in 2003, and promoted to Professor of Medicine in 2008.  She also holds a secondary appointment as Professor of Radiology at Penn and is Honorary Professor of Medicine at the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa.

About the division

Penn endocrinologists are internationally and nationally recognized for expert care in the diagnosis and treatment of endocrine disorders as well as research in endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism.

Penn endocrinologists treat people with endocrine disorders and are learning more about endocrine disorders through research to understand these diseases and provide improved treatments.

Multidisciplinary care at Penn

Penn endocrinologists work within a multidisciplinary setting that includes specialists from:

  • Bariatric surgery
  • Cancer
  • Cardiology
  • Neurology
  • Neurosurgery
  • Women's health

Together, endocrinologists can provide a continuum of care that treats the whole patient.

Endocrinology disorder services at Penn

While other endocrinologists may treat a variety of endocrine disorders, each Penn endocrinologist has a specific focus and is specially trained to treat specific endocrine disorders.

Diabetes services at Penn

Penn endocrinologists specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of diabetes, and work closely with patients' primary care providers to treat and manage diabetes and related conditions.

Pituitary disorder services at Penn

Endocrinologists at the Penn Pituitary Center are leaders in the treatment of pituitary disorders, and have been instrumental in developing the latest medications, diagnostic technologies and treatments for pituitary disorders and disease.

Thyroid disorder services and thyroid cancer care at Penn

The thyroid nodule clinic at Penn combines the latest diagnostic and imaging technology with treatments for thyroid nodules and thyroid cancer for which Penn is known.

Penn Medicine is an international leader and expert in the diagnosis, evaluation and treatment of thyroid nodules and thyroid cancer. We created the model for thyroid nodule evaluative services, and created the Penn Thyroid Nodule Clinic, which is the only one of its kind in the tri-state area.
