Electrophysiology fellowship

Fellows in the Electrophysiology Fellowship Program at the University of Pennsylvania are trained in:

  • Catheter ablation of atrial and ventricular tachycardias
  • Pacemaker insertion and management (including leadless)
  • Implantable defibrillator insertion and management (including subcutaneous)
  • Pharmacological management of arrhythmias
  • Lead extraction
  • Left atrial appendage occlusion

At HUP, our fellows rotate through the 7 electrophysiology labs at HUP, our outpatient clinic and our inpatient consult service. Fellows also rotate at the Philadelphia VA Medical Center doing EP lab procedures and consults, and in the electrophysiology lab at Pennsylvania Hospital.

In 2025 the Electrophysiology Department at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania performed:

  • VT and PVC ablations: 930
  • AF ablations: 975
  • SVT ablations: 413
  • Pacemaker implantations: 472
  • Leadless pacemaker implantations: 66
  • Transvenous ICD implantations: 384
  • Subcutaneous ICD implantations: 72
  • Extravascular ICD implantations: 26
  • Left atrial appendage occlusion devices: 84
  • Transvenous lead extractions: 170
  • DC cardioversions: 1050

How to apply to our fellowship program

  • To apply for a two-year Electrophysiology Fellowship beginning July 2027, applications must be submitted via ERAS beginning July 2026.
  • Invitations to interview will be sent in September. Interviews will be conducted virtually on Saturday, September 19, 2026.
  • All positions will be filled through the NRMP Match.
