Research

Our Department has a broad range of vigorous research programs, providing opportunities for residents, students and fellows to get involved and pursue scholarly projects. Our faculty enjoys research funding from the National Institutes of Health (multiple K and R awards), the American Heart Association, the Patient-Centered Outcomes and Research Institute, among other sources – over eight million dollars in total research funding in 2023. Demonstrating our leadership in scholarly efforts, our faculty boasts a member of the National Academy of Medicine, a national American Heart Association scientific meeting chair, and faculty with leadership positions in a broad array of academic societies. EM residents have participated actively in a range of research and scholarly activities, and faculty welcome resident participation in their work.

Each year we host a Departmental Research Day, with oral and poster presentations from faculty, fellows, residents and nursing staff.

Our department benefits from the tremendous resources available at the University of Pennsylvania for research and scholarly activity, including collaboration with the Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics, the National Clinical Scholars Program, the Center for Innovation, and a broad range of graduate programs in the biomedical sciences.

While our research activity spans a wide range of topics, areas of particular scholarly focus include:

• Resuscitation science and critical care
• Clinical bedside ultrasound
• Use of transesophageal echocardiography during CPR and critical care

Research activities are also supported through two Departmental centers:

• Center for Resuscitation Science
• Center for Emergency Care Policy & Research

Additionally, our Department has been a proud supporter of a new cross-departmental translational research program which serves to enhance acute care research capability. This program, known as the Penn Acute Research Collaboration (PARC), is based at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, and has enjoyed tremendous support from Penn Medicine leadership and Dean Jameson, as well as numerous departments across the medical campus.
