The faculty and staff of the Department of Emergency Medicine and its affiliate hospitals are dedicated to providing exceptional patient care and training the next generation of emergency physicians. We are staffed by board-certified emergency physicians who are nationally recognized for their research and advancement of emergency medicine.
We're committed to providing world-class care for both major and minor illnesses, in addition to specialty services such mental health, trauma, travel medicine and hyperbaric medicine. From our research and scholarship to community engagement to further educating care providers, we’re always mindful that everything revolves around quality clinical care.
The Department of Emergency Medicine provides clinical care in a number of exciting and diverse venues offering a remarkable breadth and depth of care for our patients. The department runs four emergency departments with over 218,000 annual visits, as well as observation and urgent care units.

Our physicians, nurses, residents, and staff work hard every day to keep Penn EM at the forefront of emergency care. We strive to continuously improve care quality, efficiency, and patient experience. Penn Medicine consistently ranks among the top medical centers in the nation, and our Department enjoys high quality consultation services and interactions with top programs in orthopedics, trauma surgery, oncology, neurology and other specialty areas.
We support a highly-competitive four year EM residency program, led by a talented team of physician educators who serve to educate the national EM leaders of the future. We offer advanced fellowship training in ultrasound, hyperbaric medicine, administrative leadership, medical education, global health, emergency medical services, and research, as well as other tailored opportunities. Our faculty are leaders in undergraduate medical education and direct multiple pre-clinical and clinical courses for medical students.
We are proud of our knowledge generation and innovation portfolio. Our Departmental research spans translational resuscitation science, health policy and economics, social detriments of health, and opioid use mitigation. Our faculty lead multiple initiatives to scale health care delivery innovations to improve clinical operations of the entire health system.
