How to apply

Anesthesiology resident applications

Interview information 2025-2026

In keeping with our peer programs and recommendations from the Association of Anesthesiology Core Program Directors, our residency program will continue using virtual interviews via Zoom this year. To ensure our applicants can make an informed decision, we will continue to host a no-stakes in person visit following our interview. This visit will occur after our rank list is finalized, ensuring that its only purpose is to give applicants additional information about our program and the city of Philadelphia.

As a candidate for our residency program, our goal is to engage you in a dynamic experience on your interview day. Your interview day will include meeting our department and program leadership while learning about our residency experience.

Your interview experience will begin with a virtual resident meet and greet the evening before the interview day. This will provide the opportunity to meet our current residents and get answers to the questions you may have. Our program leadership does not join these sessions.

We look forward to getting to know you and showing you our program. Our Anesthesiology Residency program participates in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) and accepts applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). We begin reviewing applications once ERAS opens for programs, so it is paramount to submit your application in advance of this deadline. We begin sending our interview invitations following the annual ASA Anesthesiology meeting in the middle of October and rely upon signals and geographic preferences to inform our invite list.

Applicants are responsible for ensuring that application materials have been completed and properly submitted. The Resident Selection Committee will review all completed applications and select applicants for interviews. Due to the large number of applicants, interviews will be arranged by invitation only. Our interview season is from November through December, concluding before the winter holidays.

Our program typically offers nineteen Categorical (four-year), one “Dripps” Research categorical (four-year), four Advanced (three-year), and two Reserved/Physician-only (three-year) positions. Residency candidates may specify any or all tracks when they apply. Interview offers are not based upon application to a specific track, and candidates may change their track preferences until the time that we submit our rank list.

International Medical Graduates must be ECFMG-certified and have completed at a minimum one year of U.S. clinical experience to be considered for an interview. Observerships do not meet this requirement. We do not have a timeframe for graduation from medical school; we are more interested in what you have done in the time since graduating.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Lissette Murria, Residency Coordinator at  AnesEducationOffice@pennmedicine.upenn.edu.

Thank you for your interest in our program.
